Fontaine Caffe and Creperie

Fontaine Caffe and Creperie is a gem. A quaint piece of Normandy on Royal Street in Alexandria's Olde Towne. It sits off the main drag enough to separate itself from the din of King Street but is close enough so it still catches attention. The menu has the requisite galletes (savory crepes) and the more traditional sweet crepes. As a family we enjoyed four of the offerings. My wife relived her recent trip to Normandy and had one of the "hard" ciders from that costal region. Our kids ate off the "kids" menu but we all four shared around. The kids PBJ crepe was up to adult standards (I remind the readers of Elvis Presley and his penchant for the combo). The ham and cheese crepe was no less than grueyere and some provencal ham....yummy! I had the Moroccan: Feta, spinach and balsamic vinegar: DELICIOUS! But they cold have named it the Crete Crepe and the pun would have been funnier and more apt. My wife had the favorite for the table: The Norwegian: You guessed it, smoked salmon, caramelized onions and creme fraische. Can you say luscious but not unctuous. The atmosphere was kid friendly but not kid compromised. The staff was kind to the kids and treated them as patrons instead of bringing the meal and the atmosphere down to juvenile level. This small point is often missed by US restaurants: they treat the kids as kiddies not children. The two sisters who started this Caffe have a future if they stick to their crepes. Keep it simple and keep it good! Well Done
